PHOENIX (AP) Steve Nash says he's no ``Joe Namath who walked in in his fur coat'' but the Suns playmaker is not backing away from his post-game promise that Phoenix will beat the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals.
Not might win, not try hard to win, not hope to win.
``I just said we're going home and win Game 6 and come back in Game 7,'' Nash said after practice on Friday. ``Take it how you want to take it.''
The Suns didn't seem devastated by Thursday night's last-second 103-101 loss in Los Angeles. Quite the opposite. The close call seemed to bolster their belief they can win this series, even though the Lakers are up 3-2 and can advance to the NBA finals for the third straight year with a victory in Phoenix on Saturday night.
``There's some really good things that we did last night, some things to build on,'' the Suns' Grant Hill said. ``I think the main thing is the confidence that we can beat this team. Obviously we've done it twice, and we've got to try to do it twice more.''
Nash's assurance may not have packed the flamboyance of Namath's famous guarantee that his huge underdog New York Jets would beat Baltimore in the Super Bowl, but it was enough to rile Game 5 hero Ron Artest.
``That's like no respect for us. There's no respect. That's how it's been for a long time this season. I'm sure we'll talk about it,'' Artest said before the Lakers left Los Angeles on Friday. ``Coaches have no respect for the Lakers at all. They have no respect for me. The players don't respect - a lot of the guys don't respect. ... I'm sure Kobe heard that (what Nash said), and I'm sure he'll do his part tomorrow.''
Artest's comments came after he was fined for showing up late for practice on Friday.
Phoenix rallied from 18 down in the second half to tie at 101-101 when Jason Richardson banked in a 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds to play. The Lakers pulled it out when Kobe Bryant threw up an air ball and Artest hustled to retrieve it, then banked in a shot at the buzzer.
``It was a great moment for him, for our team,'' the Lakers' Derek Fisher said. ``Ron has really sacrificed a lot for our team. He's a big part of our team. A lot of things he does go unnoticed on the stat sheet, but he's committed to doing one thing, and that's helping us win.''
The home team has won every game so far in this series, which looked to be a Lakers romp after Los Angeles scored 128 and 124 points and shot 58 percent in the first two games. Suns Coach Alvin Gentry turned to a zone defense and, buoyed by a raucous home crowd, Phoenix won the next two. Game 5 was the first truly close finish of the series.
The Suns have won six straight playoff games at home since losing to Portland in their first-round opener. The Lakers can earn their 31st trip to the NBA finals by ending that streak.
``We don't plan on going to Phoenix and losing three times on their home court,'' Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. ``We're not making this trip over there just to fill a date. We're going over there to win a game. We're highly motivated for this game, but we understand that if it has to go seven, we're damn well ready to come back home and defend our home court again. This is a series that has taken a lot of different faces to it in the course of these five games, and we don't expect Game 6 to be any different.''
Hill said the only constant for either team in the series has been the magnificence of Bryant, who is averaging 33 points, 9.6 assists and 7.4 rebounds in the five games. Bryant had 30 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists on Thursday night.
``He's made unbelievable shots,'' Hill said, ``against our man-to-man, against our zone. I mean, the guy's due for an off game. I mean he's just hit some shots like you wouldn't believe. We watched the film (of Game 5) and there was one shot he took where it wasn't contested. Other than that every shot for the most part was a hand in his face. He's been awesome.''
The difference has been how much help he gets from his teammates. On Thursday it was Pau Gasol (22 points) and Fisher (21).
This could be the last, and most important, game Amare Stoudemire plays for the Suns. The All-Star power forward can opt out of the final year of his contract after this season and said chances are ``50-50'' that he will be back.
``We've played all season for this game,'' he said. ``We've got to take advantage of it. It's all about determination now.''
Richardson blamed the loss on himself because he failed to box out Artest on Bryant's errant last shot.
``I boxed out every time but one,'' he lamented.
But Nash said no one on this team is pointing fingers.
``We all make mistake and it's misleading to pin the game on the last play when there were hundreds of plays at both ends of the court that determine the game,'' Nash said. ``We lost the game. J-Rich did a lot of great things for our team and we believe in him. We need him, so I don't place any blame on him.''
Nash had a series high 29 points and 11 assists on Thursday night, his 117th playoff game, more than any other player in NBA history who has not made it to the finals. He didn't expect to get this far with this undersized group of overachievers and the 36-year-old point guard may never get this close again.
``I thought we could make the playoffs. I thought we could get out of the first round and who knows what happens from there,'' he said. ``But to be right here with a real opportunity where we believe, that's pretty outstanding and special.''

Artest, Kobe carry Lakers past Suns, into NBA Finals
By Mike Tulumello, for NBA.com
Posted Sunday May 30, 2010 1:15AM
PHOENIX (NBA.com exclusive) -- It took hundreds of regular-season games and 14 playoff series.
The end result? The two teams heading to The NBA Finals are the same ones many had forecast way back in October's training camps.
The Lakers will join the Celtics in a Finals matchup of the league's marquee franchises after the Lakers raced past the Suns Saturday night in Phoenix 111-103. L.A. won the Western Conference finals 4-2.
"The challenge is to win a championship," said Kobe Bryant, who scored a game-high 37. "The Celtics are in the way."
The Suns, after two rousing wins in Arizona and a heart-breaking loss in Los Angeles, couldn't quite hang with the Lakers in Game 6.
The weirdest twist of the game was that the Suns invited the mercurial Ron Artest to shoot.
He obliged. Only he surprised everyone by knocking down his perimeter shots. Artest shot 10-for-16 (4-for-7 on 3-pointers) for 25 points.
"The Lord was with him tonight," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "The basketball gods were on his side."
Bryant shot 12-for-25, hitting clutch jumpers down the stretch, and knocked down 8-for-10 from the line. "We played great defense on him," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. "He made tough shot after tough shot.
"I've always thought he was the best player in basketball. I don't think it's even close."
Artest was the wild card, though. His fourth 3-pointer made it 81-67. Moments later, the Lakers led 85-67; the outcome seemed inevitable.
But the Lakers' Sasha Vujacic committed a flagrant foul on fellow Slovenian Goran Dragic. That re-energized a crowd that started out raucous then grew sleepy when the Lakers started to pull away.
On the sideline, Bryant gave Vujacic a heated tongue-lashing. On the floor, Dragic then hit two free throws and two driving layups. That propelled a furious Suns' comeback.
"I thought they were dead in the water at that particular time," Jackson acknowledged.
But, "They were ignited by an incidental play. They jumped into the fray."
With the crowd standing and roaring, the Suns pulled to within 99-96 on a Steve Nash drive with 2:19 left.
Then Bryant knocked down a 21-footer, and -- a short time later, with the Lakers leading 105-100 in the final 40 seconds -- Bryant launched an off-balance 22-footer with the Suns Jared Dudley blanketing him.
He nailed it to seal the Lakers' trip to The Finals. Gentry groaned. Bryant patted him on the rear end.
Artest's stunning sharp-shooting was the biggest reason the Lakers were able to shoot over the Suns' defense, which alternated between zone and man-to-man.
The Lakers hit 10-for-24 on 3-pointers (42 percent) while the Suns shot a modest 9-for-26 (35 percent). The taller Lakers also outrebounded the Suns 41-31.
For the Suns, speculation will begin instantly on the future of Amar'e Stoudemire. He can become a free agent if he, as expected, declines the $17-plus million option year on his contract.
Gentry praised Stoudemire, saying, "Amar'e has worked hard to become better defensively and a better teammate."
Stoudemire had a subpar Game 6. He hit just 7-for-20 shots and -- in part because he often was posted on the perimeter in the Suns' zone -- he hauled down just four rebounds.
On the plus side, he hit 13-for-15 free throws and finished with 27 points. "We didn't give Amare room to drive," Jackson said. "We kept him off his shot."
Nash shot 8-for-11 for 21 points. He had nine assists and just two turnovers. Channing Frye had 12 points and 13 boards off the bench.
Looking back, "This has been the most enjoyable year of my coaching career," Gentry said. "We had high character guys. ... And we played extremely hard.
"I've not been around a team like this, with this chemistry, in my 22 years in the league. There are no negatives. We gave it our all."
Nash agreed.
Going into the series, Nash said he considered the Lakers were the better team. "But I thought we had a chance to do something special.
"The last four or five days, I've been questioning who the better team is."
"This is as special a group as I've been involved with ... I'm really, really proud ... I'd love to keep [the team] together."
Before the game, Jackson tried to shift the psychological burden to the Suns: "It's not always easy to play in front of your home crowd" in a must-win situation, Jackson said. "It's not as easy as people think."
"That's Phil," Gentry replied when hearing the Zen-Master's comments.
Jackson's forecast turned out to be accurate.
Just like all those prognostications back in October.

GARY COLEMAN THE CHID STAR OF THE TV SITCOM DIFF'REN STROKES
Gary Coleman, the child star of the TV sitcom Diff'rent Strokes, died Friday after suffering an intercranial hemorrhage. He was 42.
Utah Valley Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Janet Frank says life support was terminated and Coleman died at 12:05 p.m.
Coleman was hospitalized Wednesday after falling and suffering a head injury at his home south of Salt Lake City, according to family members.
For a while, it seemed that Gary Coleman's cherubic face was everywhere, from TV to T-shirts to lunchboxes.
PHOTOS: A look back at Coleman's life
On Diff'rent Strokes, he played precocious Arnold Jackson, who, with his brother Willis (Todd Bridges), was adopted by a wealthy, white Manhattan man (Conrad Bain) and his daughter (Dana Plato).
Coleman's pudgy cheeks and flawless comic timing made him the break-out star of the popular series, which ran from 1978-86.
His signature line, "Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?" became a national catchphrase.
But Coleman's bright beginnings were overshadowed by domestic disputes, legal troubles and health issues. Coleman was born with a congenital kidney disease that resulted in his small stature. He had two kidney transplants and required frequent dialysis.
At the height of Diff'rent Strokes' popularity, Coleman reportedly received up to $100,000 an episode. Beginning in 1980, he won four consecutive People's Choice Awards as Favorite Young TV Performer
He parlayed his prime-time success into steady work in TV guest spots, made-for-TV movies and feature films, including On the Right Track and The Kid with the Broken Halo. The latter inspired the animated TV series The Gary Coleman Show.
But in the years after Diff'rent Strokes, Coleman was in the headlines more often for his off-screen troubles than for his acting.
In 1989, he successfully sued his parents and former advisers for misappropriation of his trust fund, which had dwindled. He was awarded $1.3 million.
In 1999, Coleman filed for bankruptcy, blaming his troubles on financial mismanagement.
In 1998, while working as a security guard, he was charged with assault for hitting a woman who had been seeking an autograph. He pleaded no contest and received a suspended sentence.
In 2007 he was cited for disorderly conduct after arguing with his wife, Shannon Price, whom he married that August. They had met on the set of the 2006 comedy Church Ball.
In 2008, he and Price appeared on the syndicated TV show Divorce Court in an attempt to save their marriage.
But last year, the two were involved in a domestic dispute which resulted in Price being arrested and both receiving disorderly conduct citations.
And he recently settled a lawsuit with a man he allegedly hit with his car outside a Utah bowling alley in 2008.
In January, Coleman was arrested for failure to appear in court for an unspecified earlier charge.
Coleman's troubles led him to be the butt of jokes for comedians and he even inspired a character by the same name in the Tony-winning musical Avenue Q.
Through it all, Coleman maintained his perspective and sense of humor. "I parody myself every chance I get," he said. "I try to make fun of myself and let people know that I'm a human being, and these things that have happened to me are real. I'm not just some cartoon who exists and suddenly doesn't exist."
Despite his real-life travails, Coleman will remain an '80s TV icon, a quick-witted boy whose onscreen charm lives on in television syndication.

SUNS' ' Offseason Hinges On Stoudemire
PHOENIX -- Steve Nash had just finished heaping effusive praise on his teammates, calling this as special a group as he'd ever played with, when he was asked if he'd like the Suns to bring everybody back.
"It's pretty clear I'd like to keep the group together," Nash said. "It's phenomenal to come to work every day with the group of guys we had, everyone fighting for the same thing, proving when you commit to one another and to what we're trying to do, you know, you really can -- all the clichés really are true. You can maybe be greater than the sum of your parts."
Although Phoenix overachieved beyond any Suns fan's wildest expectations, coming two games short of eliminating the defending champion Lakers and reaching their first NBA Finals since the days of Barkley, it won't be easy to bring back all of Nash's mates.
The first major domino will fall when Amare Stoudemire decides where he wants to play basketball next season. Stoudemire is widely expected to decline his $17.7 million player option for next year, which would put him on the market along with all the other big names in the much-ballyhooed Class of 2010.
Minutes after the Suns were eliminated, Stoudemire reiterated that it's still a 50-50 proposition that he will return to Phoenix next season.
"I'm still not sure what the future holds," Stoudemire said. "I'm just going to take a couple days, enjoy the family and enjoy the rest, and start figuring out what the next move is."
Grant Hill, who plans on finishing his career in Phoenix, has a $3.3 million option he's expected to exercise, but Channing Frye has said he will decline the $2 million option he has outplayed this season. The Suns would like to bring Frye back since he's a perfect fit for their offense, but that will depend on the price.
The Suns' only other relevant free agent is Lou Amundson, who may have outplayed the kind of salary the Suns would be willing to offer.
Even if Stoudemire leaves, the Suns would not be far enough under the cap to be a major player in free agency, especially if they bring Frye back at a raise.
But maybe the lesson we should have learned from the 2009-10 Suns is that finding the right pieces is more important than making a big offseason splash.

KOBE AND THE DRIVE FOR FIVE
By J.A. Adande
ESPN.com
PHOENIX -- The only thing Kobe Bryant hadn't done in what has been a masterful 2010 playoffs run is close out a game. And the only thing he hasn't accomplished in his 14 years in a Lakers uniform is beating the franchise's arch-rival, the Celtics, in the NBA Finals.
One down and another opportunity on deck after Bryant finished off the Phoenix Suns in Game 6 Saturday, hitting shots that ranged from incredible to ridiculous, in the Lakers' 111-103 victory. That sent the Lakers on to the Finals, where the Celtics and their institutional memories of Red Auerbach's cigar, Kevin McHale's clothesline and Paul Pierce's wheelchair await.
The Celtics also happen to be the last team to beat the Lakers in the playoffs, humiliating them with a 131-92 drubbing in the final game of the 2008 Finals.
Now that Bryant has removed the primary "but he didn't" from his career by winning a championship without Shaquille O'Neal, the range of mountains left to scale is shrinking. The Celtics gap is something for his place in Lakers lore, a way to further endear himself to the local fans still bitter about all of those defeats in the 1960s. If he wants to permanently knock Magic Johnson aside on the pedestal of beloved Lakers it's an important step to take.
Bryant is thinking on grander scale though. He said beating the Celtics would be "icing on the cake" and sounded much more obsessed with numbers than names of the victims.
"A championship's a championship," Bryant said. "It'll be my fifth ring if I'm fortunate to get it."
That would tie him with Magic and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who have the most Laker championships among the giant retired jerseys hanging in Staples Center.
Bryant is compiling other impressive numbers. In the course of averaging 29 points (on 48 percent shooting), six assists and five rebounds during these playoffs he has already surpassed Jerry West as the Lakers' all-time leading playoff scorer and moved into fourth place on the league list. Saturday marked the 75th time Bryant has scored 30 or more points in a playoff game, breaking a tie with West and giving him alone behind Michael Jordan (109) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (75) on the list of 30-point playoff performers.
But the easiest numbers to count, the ones everyone can rattle off without opening a web browser, are championship rings. Five would leave him one behind Michael Jordan. He knows there are those who won't speak of him on Jordanian terms until he gets to six. Jordan is his real rival, not the Celtics.
When it comes to teams Bryant has just as much animosity, if not more, for the Phoenix Suns, who eliminated him from the playoffs in 2006 and 2007, the second one so frustrating he took to the radio airwaves to demand a trade not long afterward. Questions about the pending Western Conference finals with the Suns after the Lakers swept the Utah Jazz in the second round this year brought more icy retorts from Bryant than what he had to say about the upcoming Celtics series, a topic he addressed with indifference.
"I didn't give a damn who we played [in the Finals]," Bryant said Saturday. "Didn't matter to me."
That doesn't mean he isn't fully cognizant of the added significance a Lakers-Celtics Finals holds. He could hear the "We want Boston" chants when the Lakers blew out the Suns in the first two games of the series, he was prepared for the onslaught of Celtics-related questions that came before the coroner even had a chance to examine the Suns. "There's a lot of things that people can write about and talk about. It's a sexy matchup."
From a basketball entertainment standpoint it won't be as appealing as the one that just ended between the Lakers and Suns. Even though the Suns fought their way back into the series by switching to a zone defense in Game 3, the Western Conference Finals were still an offensive showcase, with both teams scoring above 100 points in every game. The Lakers were on their way to another stratospheric total and were on the verge of ending the game early with a 91-74 lead after three quarters.
Then they went cold, producing only four points in the first 7 ½ minutes of the fourth quarter, while the Suns and their quiet fans were re-energized by a Sasha Vujacic whack to Goran Dragic's jaw that was ruled a flagrant-1 foul. Dragic cashed in the two free throws, then drove past Vujacic for a layup and the Suns kicked off one last scoring outburst that brought them to within three points inside 2 ½ minutes.
And then Bryant did what he's known for.
He had the chance to be The Man in Game 6 of the first round and Game 5 of this series. Both times he missed the shot, only to have teammates Pau Gasol and Ron Artest get the game-winning putback score. Artest was a candidate for the star of this game 25 points.
But it was Bryant who made the shots the Lakers had to have down the stretch, made the jumpers that had no business finding the net as well as the Suns guarded him. In the final 4 ½ minutes he spun away from Jared Dudley and pulled up in front of Channing Frye to hit a jumper, pivoted away from Grant Hill and hit a fallaway over Frye long the baseline, then hit a pair of back-to-back jumpers in Hill's face, shots so good Suns coach Alvin Gentry could only laugh.
Hill said he played even better defense than he did at the end of Game 5, when he forced Bryant to shoot an airball that Artest snatched and put in off the backboard to win it at the buzzer.
The final one was right next to the Suns bench with 35 seconds remaining.
"Great defense," Gentry told Hill.
"Not good enough," Bryant said to Gentry, adding a pat on the back for consolation.
That's the epitaph for the Suns, who exceeded expectations by reaching the conference finals and enjoyed the special camaraderie along the way. But ultimately they didn't show themselves to have the championship pedigree that Amare Stoudemire says will be the deciding factor in where he sings in free agency, and they couldn't end Steve Nash's dubious mark of appearing in the most playoff games without reaching the NBA Finals.
They played their way back into the series and back into the game, then Bryant ended it all for them.
"That [bleeping] guy," Gentry said, with as much admiration as possible.
Now the Lakers play the franchise their fans call that [bleeping] team with no hint with love at all. But to Bryant they're just another obstacle on his quest to be the Man ... no ifs, ands or bleeps.

By BEN NUCKOLS, Associated Press Writer Ben Nuckols, Associated Press Writer – Sat May 29, 7:43 pm ET
ROBERT, La. – BP admitted defeat Saturday in its attempt to plug the Gulf of Mexico oil leak by pumping mud into a busted well, but said it's readying yet another approach to fight the spill after a series of failures.
BP PLC Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said the company determined the "top kill" had failed after it spent three days pumping heavy drilling mud into the crippled well 5,000 feet underwater. More than 1.2 million gallons of mud was used, but most of it escaped out of the damaged riser.
In the six weeks since the spill began, the company has failed in each attempt to stop the gusher, as estimates of how much is leaking grow more dire. It's the worst spill in U.S. history — exceeding even the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989 off the Alaska coast — dumping between 18 million and 40 million gallons into the Gulf, according to government estimates.
"This scares everybody, the fact that we can't make this well stop flowing, the fact that we haven't succeeded so far," Suttles said. "Many of the things we're trying have been done on the surface before, but have never been tried at 5,000 feet."
The company failed in the days after the spill to use robot submarines to close valves on the massive blowout preventer atop the damaged well, then two weeks later ice-like crystals clogged a 100-ton box the company tried placing over the leak. Earlier this week, engineers removed a mile-long siphon tube after it sucked up a disappointing 900,000 gallons of oil from the gusher.
Suttles said BP is already preparing for the next attempt to stop the leak that began after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in April, killing 11 people.
The company plans to use robot submarines to cut off the damaged riser from which the oil is leaking, and then try to cap it with a containment valve. The effort is expected to take between four and seven days.
"We're confident the job will work but obviously we can't guarantee success," Suttles said of the new plan, declining to handicap the likelihood it will work.
He said that cutting off the damaged riser isn't expected to cause the flow rate of leaking oil to increase significantly.
The permanent solution to the leak, a relief well currently being drilled, won't be ready until August, BP says.
Experts have said that a bend in the damaged riser likely was restricting the flow of oil somewhat, so slicing it off and installing a new containment valve is risky.
"If they can't get that valve on, things will get much worse," said Philip W. Johnson, an engineering professor at the University of Alabama.
Johnson said he thinks BP can succeed with the valve, but added: "It's a scary proposition."
Word that the top-kill had failed hit hard in the fishing community of Venice, La., near where oil first made landfall in large quanities almost two weeks ago.
"Everybody's starting to realize this summer's lost. And our whole lifestyle might be lost," said Michael Ballay, the 59-year-old manager of the Cypress Cove Marina.

BP. Bad track record for 12 or so years at least. Explosions in the Houston metropolitan area, leaks, now this. Can't keep up with damage control. Tragic.

Oh sure, now that there's been a disaster all the right-wingers run around saying the government should have more regulations so this wouldn't have happened. That would be the same government that the rest of the time you don't want to be able to regulate ANYTHING, because after all, corporations always have the public interest at heart -- right?

why cant they make a huge clamp with a relief valve, drop it down, clamp around the leak, then seal the relief valve on the clamp? i know its deep but i cant beleive we cant make something and bring all resources in the world to bear on this problem. at least have some oil tankers out there as holding tanks for skimmers sucking up the oil right at tdc of where its coming out, that could cut oil down alot. just my 2 cents. If we can land a man on the moon in the 60's for sure we should be able to do something with this fast.

why has it taken so long for the government to help, kind of reminds people of another disaster that the government took to long to help. I can't stand the fact that it's takes another country less time to get help from our own government than we get. I feel that they need to take care of home first. thats like saying we are not important enough to come first.

Wow!!! Alot of really big words and armchair quarter backs. whether anyone likes it or not, oil makes the world go around. Petroleum is used in virtually every aspect of our lives and day to day activities. I am always amazed when I see the "Ban offshore drilling" bumper sticker....on a car that runs on oil products......and is built using petroleum based products. Parked in the garage built with materials hauled by fuel burning vessels from tranes to planes. So before everyone jumps on the I hate big oil band wagon....try and visualize how difficult life would be without it...... Just my .02.

Phil Jackson noted after a recent practice how a series "can turn on a trifle." Trifle, as defined by Webster Dictionary, means "something of little value, substance, or importance." Jackson was pointing out how seemingly little things can add up to change the outcome of a basketball game, which often contain little margin for error to begin with. The roundball version of the butterfly effect, if you will.
Tonight, however, we learned how events with absolutely zero subtlety can also change a game's direction. Like, say, an incredibly stupid and juvenile flagrant foul by Sasha Vujacic on Goran Dragic.
The fellow Slovenians are apparently feuding -- gotta love bad blood between Euro reserves -- and Dragic mouthed off after hitting a jumper over Vujacic at the top of the fourth quarter. The Machine reacted as any professional with a modicum of self control would: He "accidentally" hit Dragic in the chin while "raising his arms in the air." Dragic predictably flops and the referees predictably buy it. Dragic cans his pair of freebies, then Phoenix's next shot as they retain possession.

9. When Last They Met ...

After the teams' Jan. 31 meeting, the Lakers' inability to contain Rajon Rondo was a concern. ESPN Los Angeles columnist Dave McMenamin wrote, "Quick, penetrating guards make the Lakers' defense fold faster than a Texas hold 'em player who draws a 2-4 unsuited." And L.A. coach Phil Jackson said Rondo "literally changed the ballgame in a matter of about four minutes" in the second quarter.
Rondo helped erase a 13-point Lakers lead in the blink of an eye with his at-will penetration. Rondo, who finished with 21 points, 12 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals, was covered primarily by Bryant rather than 35-year-old L.A. point guard Fisher, though Jackson made a point of blaming the whole team's defense for letting Rondo run wild.
Bryant wasn't around for the Feb. 18 rematch, but Rondo again had a major impact with 14 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. How the Lakers contend with Rondo could be the most important aspect of the Finals.

EVERTON WOMEN SECURE SECOND PLACE
Everton women secure second placeE
Everton clinched runners-up spot in the Women's Premier League with a 2-0 win at Blackburn Rovers on the final weekend of the season.
The Toffees will also join champions Arsenal in Europe next season.
Arsenal, who secured the title last weekend, ended their campaign with a 4-1 win against Birmingham City,
Chelsea won 2-1 at lowly Nottingham Forest to finish third, only one point behind Everton but 12 adrift of Arsenal.
Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Everton
Substitute Toni Duggan gave Everton the lead and Natasha Dowie, with her 31st goal of the season, wrapped up victory.
Dowie's goal was also her 18th of the Premier League campaign, but she lost out to Arsenal's Kim Little for the Golden Boot award.
Arsenal 4-1 Birmingham City
Little's tremendous goal-filled season ended with her 22nd in the league and her 47th in all competitions.
First-half strikes by Lauren Bruton and Jennifer Beattie set the Gunners up for a comfortable victory over the third-bottom team.
Little added the third goal seven minutes after the interval and captain Jayne Ludlow bagged the fourth four minutes from time.
Substitute Gina Goulding hit a last-minute consolation effort, but Birmingham's season limped to a sad end with their sixth defeat in seven outings.
Nottingham Forest 1-2 Chelsea
Andi Bell gave second-bottom Forest a 39th minute lead, but Drewe Spence levelled the scores a minute before the break.
It then took the visitors until two minutes from time to score the winning goal through Sophie Perry.
But it nevertheless completed a fine end to the campaign for Blues, who won all of their final seven matches.

LANCE AMSTRONG
The cyclist Floyd Landis once was a commanding presence at the Tour of California, an eight-day race that attracts some of the world’s top riders. With keen skill and unmatched toughness, he won in dominating fashion four years ago and went on to become the Tour de France champion — a title that was stripped from him for doping.

Sports of The Times: Suspicion Is One Nemesis Armstrong Can’t Outpedal (May 21, 2010)
Now, with a reputation as a pariah and his personal life and career at a low, Landis has unexpectedly returned to the sport’s spotlight at the race, which began Sunday. This time, it is for saying that he and many top American cyclists — including several racing here — were involved in systematic doping.
Until now, the 34-year-old Landis had vehemently denied using performance-enhancing drugs, but in e-mail messages in recent weeks to cycling officials, he not only detailed his own doping practices, but he also said he watched Lance Armstrong and others inject the blood-booster EPO and use blood transfusions for increased endurance. He said some riders also took steroids and human growth hormone.
Landis did not return phone messages left for him. He acknowledged to ESPN.com that he had no documentation to prove his claims, but said he kept a journal. He said he wrote the e-mail messages because “I want to clear my conscience,” adding, “I don’t want to be part of the problem anymore.”
It all put a pall over Stage 5 of the Tour of California, which was further darkened when Armstrong crashed and was taken to the hospital for stitches under his left eye.
Before racing began on Thursday, Armstrong described Landis as a broken man with no credibility. “I would say I’m surprised, but I’m not,” Armstrong said as he stood with the team manager, Johan Bruyneel, at his RadioShack bus. “He has no proof,” Armstrong said. “It’s just our word against his, and we like our word. We like where we stand.”
Armstrong said Landis had been sending him e-mail and text messages for the past couple of years suggesting that he would go public with accusations about him, and that the messages recently reached “a fever pitch.”
Bruyneel, who was also implicated in the e-mail messages, said Landis had asked him “for money, basically a lot of money” and a job on the team in exchange for his silence.
He added Landis was looking for money to pay for legal bills that were accumulating after he tested positive at the Tour de France. “Threatened, blackmailed, whatever you want to call it,” Bruyneel said.
When asked if he contacted the police about the threats, Bruyneel said no.
Landis had a volatile personality and that he should “seek professional help, and by that I don’t mean lawyers,” Bruyneel said.
Landis, who now races with the lower-level OUCH-Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling team, has struggled to keep his life on track since testing positive for a synthetic form of testosterone at the 2006 Tour de France.
Not only was Landis’s cycling career crumbling, but less than a month after the Tour, his father-in-law, a close friend, committed suicide. Landis campaigned for donations from fans to help finance his $2 million fight against the United States Anti-Doping Agency, only to end up losing. He served a two-year suspension. His marriage fell apart. No top team would sign him.
This February, a French court issued an arrest warrant for him in connection with a computer hacking case involving the national antidoping lab.
Landis, known as a wisecracking eccentric, moved into a cabin in the Southern California woods, said two former teammates, who didn’t want their names published because they had been told not to talk to reporters.
Some of Landis’s friends had not spoken to him in years, said Allen Lim, an exercise physiologist on Armstrong’s RadioShack team. In his e-mail messages, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, Landis said Lim had helped him dope; Lim called the allegations “crazy,” and said he would never work with a rider who used performance-enhancing drugs.
Some of Landis’s closest friends in the sport were those he implicated: Armstrong; the United States road-racing champion George Hincapie; the three-time Tour of California champion Levi Leipheimer; and the five-time United States time trial champion David Zabriskie, who is second over all at the Tour of California. In a statement sent by his team, BMC Racing, Hincapie said he had “earned the respect of my peers and a reputation for working hard, honestly and honorably.” He added, “I’m really disappointed to hear these accusations.”
Jonathan Vaughters, the manager of Zabriskie’s Garmin-Transitions team, said Landis “had his demons,” but he could not explain why Landis made his allegations.
Armstrong said he saw Landis every day of last month’s Tour of the Gila in New Mexico and “not a word” was said. But away from the race, Landis was sending e-mail messages to Steve Johnson, the chief executive of USA Cycling, telling him, “It’s up to you to demonstrate your true colors.

Stengths
Unusual height for his position, terrific athlete, excellent jumper and quickness ... With 6-9 height, he has the ability to play the point guard position ... Decent ball handling skills, talented passer, outstanding court vision, good at finding open teammates ... Very unselfish with pass first mentality, great fast break player and play-maker, accurate bounce passer ... Penetrates well with a good ability to attack the hoop, quick first step ... Takes advantage of being left handed catching opponents off guard ... Likes to dunk, can do windmill/360 dunks easily ... Can shoot anywhere inside the NBA 3-point line ... Nice shooting stroke, soft touch, high release points on his shot ... Can guard positions from 1 to 4 , taking advantage of his height and length to pressure his opponents to adjust their shooting rhythm ... Great lateral speed on defense ; good reflexes as well as leaping ability make him a good shot blocker ... He performs as a help defender and even a rebounder under the basket for his team. 2.5 blks,1.9 stls and 7 rebs per game, the numbers reflect his defensive contribution ... His versatility gives him a chance to get Quadruple-double statistics in games, granted it's the ABA.... Shows a great passion to win other than his stats ... In addition, his age is not in question.
Stengths
Physically weak like most young Chinese players ...His ball handling and ball protection need improvement for the NBA level ... As the main distributer (a team high 6.7 assists per game) , he usually saw the most pressure from their opponents, getting doubled sometimes. 4 Turnovers per game indicates that he should better learn to deal with tough defense ... He relies on his left hand too much , though he is making progress on his right handed ball handling skills ... To be a NBA player, his shooting skills still need work, less stability from downtown (39% FG, 25% 3pt FG ) Raw 1 on 1 skills ... Underdeveloped post skills, with his size learning to post up smaller wing players would be a big advantage for him ... Some concern about his ability to guard fast NBA guards ...
Notes: Selected by Chinese national team coach Jonas when he was only 19 yrs old ... Honored All Star player of ABA league in his first year contacting American style basketball ... Has showed progress in adapting to American culture and his language skills with a year in the ABA ...
